Nasal Mucosa: The entire inner cavities of the nose: airway cavities + all three pairs of turbinates + the sinus cavities, on both sides, are covered with a thick layer of tissue rich with blood vessels and central nervous system nerve endings, called – Nasal Mucosal Tissue. But only the turbinates have significant erectable capabilities, because of the size and thickness of their nasal mucosal tissue (below the epithelium layer) – the “Lamina Propria” - which is very similar in expansion capabilities to other erectable tissues of the body, such as the penis and the clitoris. The turbinates have the capacity to shrink to the size of the diameter of their supporting bone, and to expand to fill in the entire nasal airway cavities, when needed. Of course – harboring such a potential means that the turbinates have a very rich blood supply net of arteries and veins, with nerve endings connected directly to the CNS (central nervous system). ![]() Fig 9: Right side nasal cavities and sinuses ![]() Fig 10: Mucoa Layers of right inferior turbinate cross section (under microscope)
